How far do we have to live from our school to receive bus service?

In December 2024, Alberta Education announced new changes to transportation eligibility. 

Effective September 1, 2025 the following students are eligible to receive bus service: 

  • Kindergarten - Grade 6 students living 1.6 km or more from their designated school
  • Grade 7 - 12 students living 2 km or more from their designated school

 

For the 2025-26 school year, if you live closer than 1.6 or 2 km from your designated school, you may apply for bus service. To be approved, there must be space on the bus route, your child must use an existing bus stop, and a bus fee may apply. Students living closer than these distances will be assigned to a bus as space allows.

Is there a bus fee?

Parents are required to pay a fee for Kindergarten - Grade 6 students who live closer than 1.6 km to their designated school and Grade 7 - 12 students who live closer than 2 km to their designated school. These fees are subject to annual review.

If your children are riders on buses operated by another school division, please contact their transportation department directly, for their terms, conditions and fees.

What is the registration deadline?

The registration deadline for the 2025-26 school year is noon on June 15, 2025. Any registrations received after June 15, 2025 will be processed in August as space allows.

How will transportation registrations be processed?

All students living 1.6 km (K - Gr. 6) or 2 km (Gr. 7 - 12) or more from their designated school will be assigned transportation.

As space allows, preference will be given to existing riders living closer than 1.6/2 km to their designated school.

Any remaining seats will be assigned to newly registered students in the following order: Kindergarten - Grade 3 living closer than 1.6 km from their designated school (including any siblings requiring transportation), Grade 4 - 6 students living closer than 1.6 km from their designated school, and finally any Grade 7 - 12 students living closer than 2 km from their designated school.

I received an email requesting a response by July 19 to confirm my registration, why?

To address waitlist students in a timely fashion, we ask families who are assessed a fee to confirm that they still wish to have access to transportation services. If you do not respond to this email, your registration will be removed.  Please check your email regularly on the status of your registration in the first week of July.

I ticked the Transportation Box when I registered at the school, is that all I have to do?

No. The school registration form has a tick box for transportation, and you must complete a separate transportation registration form online to be placed on a bus. 

My child(ren) has been placed on a waiting list, now what?

It will take some time to build capacity to allow us to accommodate newly eligible students who may wish to access transportation. As routes are added, parents/guardians will be updated on waiting list progress as it is possible changes will be made to bus routes part way through the school year.
